Chapter Nine

Cassidy

“As much as it pains me to say it, we wanna congratulate Cass on a hell of a front-page article today. Readers have been going crazy for it. It just might be our most popular exclusive yet.” Ace turned his eyes on me. Just that was enough to make my body flushed. It wasn't long ago that we were battling over giving my articles more publicity. Now he was my alpha and praising me on the front page of his paper, however begrudgingly. I thought things would magically change with him overnight. They didn’t. We hadn’t gotten any huge blow-black from our little snafu last night, other than a few light-hearted jabs here and there. I was amazed everyone took it so well. I hoped to keep the excitement around it to a minimum.

My colleagues clapped for me and patted my shoulder.

“Hell of an article,” Ace continued. He still looked so constipated about it. “It’s got it all. A loved-up couple with a baby on the way, fashion, flowery stuff. And, oh, who's that hot piece of man right there?” I’d included a picture of the two of us. He was pointing at himself. Everybody laughed. Even now, he couldn’t just give me a real compliment about my work?

“How’d you end up at the party together, anyway, Ace?” Troy said, standing in the doorway with his arms crossed like always.

“You mean how did I get roped into spending my whole off day with this one right here? Well, we won't get into everything that happened at the party, so suffice it to say I was kidnapped.” He winked at me. Why was I getting so hot for him right now? I scooted around in my seat. I hoped it would stop me from getting wet all over again. Asshole.

“You smell weird,” Murder said. He leaned over and stuck his nose in the shoulder of my blazer.

“Way to ruin my moment, Murder.” I leaned away, hoping he didn’t smell Ace’s lingering scent on me.

“Not bad weird. Good weird.” He shrugged.

“What exactly is good weird?” I said. It came out more snarky and defensive than I meant it to.

“What's going on?” Bubbles dragged out the words and gave us a suspicious look. Ace interrupted before anyone could start putting two and two together.

“Murder’s report is what's going on. Whaddya got for us?” Ace asked.

Murder wiggled in his seat.

“There’s a brand new serial killer in London. He likes to keep his victims’ left eyeball as a souvenir.”

“You're way too excited about that,” Biz said.

“What else is new?” Murder replied. He was shimmying now.

“Why the left eyeball?” Troy asked.

“Yeah, what's wrong with the right? Why make the right eyeballs feel left out?” Blue whined.

“How about everybody keeps both their eyeballs?” Ace snapped.

“That’s no fun,” Murder replied.

We carried on with our meeting and it was just as zany as usual. The only difference was the sexual charge between Ace and I. Every time we made eye contact, I had to suppress my urges. The guys noticed something was going on but nobody asked any questions.
